The Saint Mary’s fall Psychology Symposium (December 9th, 2010) also allowed students in collaborative labs and experimental psychology share their research and studies they have done this semester. Three collaborative groups created posters to report findings in the areas of alcohol, aggression, and body image. The experimental psychology class had three posters on display as well, presenting data on caffeine, alcohol, and happiness. Check out some pictures from the symposium below.










Thursday, December 9th 2010, was SMU’s fall Psychology Symposium. Here on campus, oral internship integration presentations were given by psychology students . They shared their experiences and what they have learned through their internships. Kristina Empanger presented on “Equine-Assisted Therapy and Mental Health.” Casey Twardowski titled his presentation “Concussion in Sports: Where are we? Where are we going?” Samantha Franklin followed, sharing about “Examining the Influences of the Family on Adolescent Substance Use.” In the second group of interns, Caiti Knudson reported on “Exploration of Factors Contributing to Recurring Crises Among Adolescents and Families” and Nicole Valenzuela shared about “The Influence of Dietary Modification and Parental Involvement on the Behavior of Children with Autism.” Acacia Gammage presented on “Dual Relationships” and Mackenzie Ferguson closed the presentations talking about “Creating Less Culturally Biased Tests for English Language Learners.” Congratulations to all those who presented, they did a wonderful job!

Careers in Psychology: School Psychology

Saint Mary's chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology is sponsoring the first career panel of the year on Monday, October 4, from 7-8pm in the World Room (Hendrickson 120), on the topic of school psychology. Dr. Betty Deboer, faculty member in the school psychology program at UW-LaCrosse will be joined by two graduate students, including SMU alum Megan Pulvermacher.

2010 Fall Psychology Internship Presentations


The fall Psychology internship presentations took place Tuesday afternoon, September 14, 2010, here at St. Mary’s University. Several students shared their experiences from their summer internships with the many students and faculty that attended. Presentations included: Robert Sassetti at Hephzibah Children’s Association in Chicago, IL, Samantha Franklin at OMNI Youth Services in Chicago, IL, Nicole Valenzuela at Clearbrook in Chicago, IL, Acacia Gammage at Harriet Tubman Center in Minnesapolis, MN, Caiti Knudson at The Bridge for Youth in Minneapolis, MN, Kristina Empanger at Capable Kids in Chaska, MN, Casey Twardowski at the Rochester Mayo Sports Medicine Clinic, in Rochester, MN and Mackenzie Ferguson at Winona Public Schools, in Winona, MN. Activities Fair



September 1, 2010 was a wonderful day for an outdoor activity fair here at St. Mary’s University. The SMU psych club officers joined in, recruiting new students to look into St. Mary’s psychology department. At the activity fair, information about the SMU psych club, and other upcoming activities were provided. Thanks to the activity fair there was a good turn out at the first psych club meeting of the year! Alcohol Presentation April 14, 2010

Mr. Jason Flanders gave a presentation on alcohol issues on Wednesday, April 14, at 4pm in Salvi Hall (SM 332). 34 students participated in a discussion of the effects of alcohol on cognition, social function, and academic outcomes.

SMY Psychology Alumni Visit

On Friday April 9th, the SMU Psych department invited two SMU Alumni to return to visit with students and facility about Life After a Psychology Degree at SMU. Maria Graf and Tiffany Brown, the visiting alumni, were happy to share where a psychology major from St. Mary’s has taken them thus far. Maria Graf is now a clinical psychologist, where as Tiffany Brown is currently a practicing lawyer. Thank you to both Maria and Tiffany for a very successful discussion and sharing your life experiences with us!

 

Psych Club


Thursday April 8th was the last SMU Psych Club meeting of the 2009-2010 school year. It was held in the World Room (Hendrickson 120) at 3:30pm. Pizza and pop were provided for all who attended. The meeting started out as an open discussion of what members would like to see happen with Psych Club next year, including ideas about future events, any changes that are needed, etc. The main focus of the meeting was centered on electing next year's Psych Club Officers. Nominations were made and the votes were tallied. Congratulations to the new officers of SMU Psych Club 2010-2011: the president Steve Lochen, the vise president KC Gammage, the secretary Casey Twardowski, and the treasurer Kristina Empanger (pictured above). Thank you everyone who participated in Psych Club this past year, and we hope to see you there next year as well!

Saint Mary's Psychology students will be presenting their experiences in:

  • Internships and Internship Preparation
  • Collaborative Research Labs
  • Thesis Development

Last year's symposium was attended by many students, faculty, and visitors.  The symposium is a great chance to learn more about what is going on in the Psychology Department and the many fascinating and invaluable experiences students have been participating in over the course of the semester.  This year, we once again expect a large crowd.
